About

Professor Richard Reed has focused his research directly on three main areas: (a) the links between sustainability and the built environment, more specifically being the (valuation) business case for sustainability and lifecycle costing (b) valuation or appraisal research on both real property (all land uses) and personal property (c) housing related research including social geography, reverse mortgages, housing affordability and low income housing.  He is the visiting Environmental Professor at the IRE/BS University in Regensburg, Germany.  He authored the ‘Business Case for Sustainability’ chapter for Your Building (www.yourbuilding.org) and is a member of international sustainability committees.  Richard is a Fellow of the Australian Property Institute (API) and edited ‘The Valuation of Real Estate’ (2007) text for the API, as well as being consulting editor for ‘The Australian and New Zealand Property Journal’.  He is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and has conducted international research studies for RICS.  He authored ‘A Greener House’(an investor’s guide to sustainability) (Wiley) and ’Property Development’(5th ed.) (Routledge), both with Sara Wilkinson as co-author.  In addition he is editor of ‘The International Journal of Housing Markets and Analysis’ (Emerald UK) and has presented at many Australian and international conferences.  He also presents regularly at industry events and is widely published in the area.  He has previously held positions at the University of Melbourne (to 2007) and the University of Queensland (to 2001). Currently he is Professor of Property and Real Estate at Deakin University (Melbourne) where he developed and introduced Victoria's only focused 3 year Bachelor of Property and Real Estate.  In this course he lectures to students about his three research areas including property and sustainability.
